We are now proud to be importing pre-owned Fender Japan Strat, Tele, P-Bass, Jazz Bass, Jaguar and Jaguar Bass, Jazzmaster, Mustang (including the famous Mustang Short Scale Scale Bass). Although we will primarily be selling 'good as new' CIJ and MIJ, we will have the occasional Tokai and Fujigen Squier Tele. I just took delivery of a '57 VSP Strat and a '66 Jaguar. Both of them looked like they were new 'out of the box'! The VSP Strat was tracked down for someone who particularly wanted it with DiMarzio pickups - the new VSP Strat has Alnico.
I am currently awaiting delivery of a pristine Gerry McGee SIgnature Tele.

For those not aware of Charlie, he has set up and maintained guitars for most of the usual 'Guitar Hero' suspects that you could name. He gives seminars at NAMM and the London Electric Guitar Show and a contributor to what is probably the most comprehensive guitar manual published - Totally Guitar.

Note: A few words about Basswood. When Fender Japan were exporting, one of the dealers' differentiators between the Japanese and US models was that Basswood was inferior to Alder and indeed the non-Japanese Basswood was. Basswood however is the wood of choice on many guitars e.g. theYngwe Malamsteen signature @ £1900. Here is what an independent luthier,
Guitar Wood Types and Tones FAQ has to say about Basswood:

Basswood is a soft wood with tight grains. Its relatively inexpensive of all the usual guitar woods, and it’s easy on router bits in the factory, easy to sand, and easy to seal and finish. The softness of basswood means that sharp highs are dampened and smoothened. That helps offset the tinny sound associated with knife edged tremolo contacts. The softness also fosters a weaker low end. It’s light in weight, but not because of large pores. Rather it’s low in mass overall. Deep, breathy sub-lowsaren’t resonated in Basswood. The reduction in these outer frequencies leaves the mids pronounced in a hypothetical response curve. Its very suitable for the typical guitar range, and very suitable for lead guitar, because of its pronounced “out front” sound. Complex overtone sare muted along with the highs leaving a strong fundamental tone.

Production notes: Japanese factories like Ibanez seem to get a tan colored, more uniform Basswood while other Asian factories get a more flawed yellowish basswood. And there seems to be a big difference in tone. A clearer, darker Basswood should produce more sound, while the yellowish lower grade seems to have more of the undesirable tonal qualities of Poplar. A hardtail emphasizes the reduced dynamics of the outer frequencies.

......A little bit of history

Most people know that Fender stopped exporting their Japanese manufactured Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars because many believed the build quality to be superior to the US models. When I took my first Japanese Strat to be fret-dressed, a very distinguished luthier, and onetime bluesman told me that the best Stratocaster or Telecaster I could have was to take my Japanese one, re-profile the neck and swap the pickups for US Fenders or an alternative such as Seymour Duncan or Lindy Fralin - many of the Fender Japan non-export models have US pickups. “You end up with a better 'Custom' than Custom Shop for less than the cost of a US Standard.”

OK - so what do we have to say about the reasons behind this venture. Well there is absolutely no doubt that Leo Fender's reputation is intact! The new US Fenders are as good as they have ever been; even Pete Townshend, the greatest all-round guitarist is playing a Strat these days - unheard of in the past despite Eric Clapton giving him one of his early acquisitions! Trouble is that Japanese manufacturing is better than US. Look at the prestige cars in the US - they are not American, they are Lexus followed by European marques. So to achieve the quality of the Japanese manufacture, Fender US have to pay their workers more and pass the cost onto us, the consumer!

Spending a large sum to get your perfect instrument is something we identify with. We have all been musicians since our teens and buying that first Fender is a major step. We read the mags, go to the shops and get it into our head that unless we get a US Fender we are compromising; that is the reason for the Highway 1! It's an OK axe for the money (as long as you don't mind not having any lacquer protection on the body to enable the Rory Gallagher look early in its life) so full marks to Fender.
